Right, the HIA remix EP is a four track lovely featuring mixes by A
Positive Life, Mixmaster Morris, Autechre & Pentatonik. Exactly what
the tracks are I have no idea.
Whether or not it will be available on CDsingle, or just the usual 12",
I have no idea, but I think their appeal is such that Beyond can
warrant a CDsingle release.
They've also got a new track on the next Artificial Intelligence LP,
out sometime this month [apparently], and they've had a live version
of 'Delta' on the Volume Eight [I think] compilation LP.
The tracks on the Ambient Dub albums are indeed different to the LP
versions; on ADVOL1 there is a different mix of Ketamine Entity, on
ADVOL2 there is a track W.H.Y., which mutated into Re-Echo for the
purposes of the album, as well as Speed Leard, the 'Frontal Lobe'
mix from the 12", although it is not titled so. ADVOL3 starts off with
a different version of Delta, that isn't as good as the LP version, but
interesting all the same.
They've done a remix of FAMILUS HORRIBILUS for Pop Will Eat Itself, but
you can forget it's PWEI as there's only a synth line left in it from
the original. This is on the first CD single of RSVP/Familus Horribilus,
and while it's certainly not amazing, it's damn good and worthy of
seeking out for completion.
I spoke to Madga from Oscillate last week, and she said that HIA had
been writing their second album, and the next live date [the debut
of the new stuff, I presume] is at Oscillate on the 29th of April.
Some time ago I had a chat with Bobby Bird from HIA at Oscillate, and
he was incredibly friendly, and we had a 10 minute chat about how we
set up his home-studio. Nice man.
The tapes that are available may well now be deleted; I picked up
Live at Oscillate from Oscillate a few months ago, but they never seem
to have any copies of Live From The Back Of Beyond. Anyway, live at
Oscillate is easily as interesting as Colourform, it's improvisational,
experimental and groovy. There's some bloke talking/singing over some
of the tracks, but last time I saw them live he wasn't there, so I
only presume they've done the decent thing and taken away his mic!
W.H.Y., SpeedLearn, Spectral and Ketamine Entity are the main ones on
this tape, with Sub-Oscillate2 & Genius Island being the experimental
ambient stuff. Interesting how the bloke seems to be singing some
proper chorus thing over Spectral...where HIA once a PROPER group with
a singer? The mystery thickens...
Someone else to look out for if you're into HIA are A Positive Life,
a duo from Bradford. Stef from APL DJ's at Oscillate sometimes, and
APL are produced by HIA. ADVOL2 is again the thing to go for here, with
'The Calling' [recently sampled by Enigma], and 'Universal Message'.
They had a track 'Hypnosystem' on ADVOL3, and at the start of the year
released 'The Calling EP', featuring 3 mixes, including a HIA mix, and
an 11 minute ambient LOVED'UB mix. If you like HIA, you'll love this
stuff, as it's got all the bass and 303 squelching you could ever want.
Enjoy!
